Our thoughts can have a powerful effect upon us. Even before we recognize that we have had a particular thought, it may have already changed our physiology. A thought has the power to affect our heart rate and breathing functioning, raise our blood pressure, increase muscle tension, inhibit digestion and most of all, curtail the functions of the cerebral cortex part of our brains. And of course, thoughts are the source of a lot of emotional distress. . We who suffer from emotional distress--anxiety, depression, anger problems, low self esteem, social phobia, impulse control problems, panic attacks, etc.--often feed our distress by our habitual thoughts. An essential part of the RECOVERY INTERNATIONAL training program is to learn to recognize the thoughts that are contributing to our distressing states of mind. It is the recognition that we doing this (stirring ourselves up), that allows us to stop it. And with self observation, we generally find that our distress is related to our thinking habits—which usually involve a lot of blame and shame and alarmist kind of thinking. . Using the RECOVERY INTERNATIONAL Method and the RI tools, we give our thoughts a reality check. Is the thought accurate? Often it is not. Often it is an automatic response, a habit. With self observation, we learn to recognize our thought habits. . Is the thought useful? Useful thoughts help us keep calm; help us handle our situations with self control; lead to problem solving and higher functioning; help us avoid unnecessary conflict with others. Thoughts that are not useful do the exact opposite. . Using the RECOVERY INTERNATIONAL method and the RI tools, we learn that we do have the power to curtail undesirable thinking. And when we curtail these thoughts, we also curtail the distressing emotional and physical symptoms that goes along with them. And with the RI training, we gain control over our undesirable thinking habits and enhance our emotional wellness considerably. . When you visit a RECOVERY INTERNATIONAL meeting, you will hear testimony upon testimony that the RECOVERY INTERNATIONAL method works. . Ann Landers speaking of Recovery, Inc. (now RECOVERY INTERNATIONAL) “Their record of success is phenomenal.” . Meetings are free although we do pass a basket for free-will donations. .
