Before anyone freaks out, the leopard used for that skirt is totally fine. Very closely shaven, but fine.  Read more...

Flatiron

I've been to New York, oh, I'm not sure I can count that high. And this weekend was the first time I have ever seen the Flatiron Building. Worth the wait.  Read more...

An interstellar burst

A couple of weeks ago my brother and I agreed to meet at a sushi restaurant for lunch. A few hours beforehand he texted me to make sure our plans were still firm:  Read more...

We're bidding on three old, ragged collars just as soon as Marlo puts her left hand on her hip and swoops her right hand in the air.  Read more...

Hankering

Is it ever okay to wear a tank top to a meeting with someone who could potentially affect your paycheck? Of course, as long as you order them an iced tea from Long Island.  Read more...

Local news, redefining excellence

I'm watching the local evening news, and the lead story is about a group of disgruntled University of Utah students whose lives are being made entirely unlivable because the landing pad for a medical helicopter has been temporarily moved near their dormitory. They're calling it "a conflict between life and death, a conflict between peace and quiet." They had to choose between starting with this story or the one about a man who put his Chihuahua in the oven. I cannot possibly imagine the hand-wringing in the control room. Here's an idea: take off the headsets, set down the clipboard and SEND SOMEONE TO SAVE THE CHIHUAHUA.  Read more...

Over the East River

I got to walk along the East River in Manhattan on Sunday morning, one of the most gorgeous days I've ever spent in New York. So I acted like an obnoxious tourist and gawked at this landmark a little too earnestly. It's probably my favorite thing in the city, that and the angry, cynical cab drivers who take pride in escaping death at every turn. The attitude with which they operate a vehicle is my spirit animal.  Read more...

DA BIRD!

A couple of weeks ago I took the girls over to Kate's house to see her new chickens. No surprise, Leta said hello, nice to meet you, now where are the books? But Marlo... Marlo wanted to become one with those birds. She wanted to put her face under their wings and give them kisses. She told them stories about the gorilla she saw at the zoo and the octopus she saw at the aquarium and the STHNAAAAKE! she saw in her backyard.  Read more...

The dreaded year

About two months after Leta turned three years old (during one of her epic, inimitable body-throwing tantrums) I remember thinking that I would rather have my vagina sewn shut than have another kid. Is that too gross? Over the line? If I stop right there and don't mention balls or anal glands will you forgive me? No? WELL AREN'T YOU PRECIOUS.  Read more...

For Jeff

Earlier today I was out running errands, and as I was waiting for an order to be filled I opened my phone to scroll through twitter. I immediately noticed a tweet about someone (@fedge) I follow who was in possible danger, and if anyone who lived in Seattle could contact the police, please do so immediately. My heart dropped in my chest with a thud, and when I checked his tumblr, I did not allow myself to believe what I was reading:  Read more...

Tuesday's Top Pick

Yesterday I was browsing Etsy looking at clothing for children when I stumbled on the Crowsmack shop. All of the designs are original artwork, and each product is handmade and silk screened in sweatshop free downtown Los Angeles. A great way to fill your kid's wardrobe with something totally unique and lovingly made.  Read more...

Popcorn popped

This weekend I cleaned off the back porch: I washed cushions, scrubbed the grill, swept out grass and debris, and washed chalk drawings off of the pavement. Then I went full Mormon and cut some flowers off of a tree to make it seem more homey (watching out for rattlesnakes the whole time, of course). And wow. I just used the word HOMEY on this website. Feel free to poke me in the eye with a dirty finger.  Read more...

To the rescue, my friend

One afternoon last week, I don't even remember what day it was (why have I not blocked this event out of my brain entirely?), Tyrant came upstairs into the office and he was carrying Marlo. Let me back up a second and tell you that before Tyrant joined the team here he didn't really care for kids or dogs, or, you know, being a decent human being. Oh! And I may not be able to get him back for all the pranks he's pulled on me over the years, but I can have him pick up my tampons:  Read more...

Nature luxe love

I’ve never had a good experience with any type of lipstick, lip balm, lip gloss, or whathaveyou. I typically just choose to go without, and focus on makeup for the rest of my face.
I recently discovered Nature Luxe Gloss Balm in Tulip. I’m a believer. Thanks CoverGirl.  Read more...

"Glinting gems in the concrete I paved"

A few weeks ago I showcased a couple of songs from the band Delta Spirit who released a new album in March. I bought that album the day it was released and have listened to it nonstop since then, mostly in the car when I'm shuttling Leta to school or running errands (I gave up NPR until the election is over so that I don't purposely drive the car into a brick wall).  Read more...

Portrait of bliss

Beck!

My good friend Stacia brought over her boys on Sunday to hang out for a couple of hours, including three-year-old Beck who very meekly asked Marlo to accompany him to the playhouse in the backyard. But Marlo was busy managing her truck stop OR SOMETHING and shut him down not so very elegantly. There is a part of me that is like, please keep this up until you are at least 30. And then another part that is like, dude. It's not like he's asking for a down payment. Come on.  Read more...

Slow and steady

Thursday afternoon when I picked Leta up from school she came running out of the building with a little more lilt than usual. She was bounding, swinging her arms, and her smile rivaled the perfect curve of a circle. She jumped up into my arms without warning almost sending me to the ground, and I suddenly thought, wow. That was a perfect reenactment of a Mormon discovering coffee.  Read more...
