on sunday morning i had a brain-wave and wrote a poem about something that had been floating around in my brain for a while. now i have had some feedback and tweaked it enough to feel it's finished but i have no idea what to do with it now.... anyway. i got a real high after i'd finished it, and it was a great feeling - for that brief window in time after you've finished something you've made and you're really please with how it turned out, you're just totally invincible... well, this feeling happened to coincide with a monday morning at work, and amazingly, it still lifted me up and sent me soaring... for about three hours. then i was dumped back into reality, rolled and rumbled in the harsh sands of reality, totally winded and dislocated and bruised, and i had to literally drag... a weight off my shoulders...
so, i've been writing (i know, doing actual writing!) and i was worried a little that what i thought was good was actually not too good at all. you see, my next project is taking me on a new and different journey, down the YA (meaning 'young adult') fiction path. while this may sound easier than writing for grown-ups, i don't think that's true - it's a whole different ballgame, and brings its own challenges. i am enjoying it - but i found myself grinding to a halt because the idea that i might not be doing it right had begun weighing heavier and heavier on my mind. so i got my 13 year old nephew to read it and he said he liked it, though a part of me was thinking 'you have to say that cause i'm your auntie and you feel sorry for me because though i'm twenty years older than you, you're so much taller than me'. you know, the usual familial paranoia. Last week we took a trip to Wakayama Prefecture which I'll be blogging about in this and coming posts. Our first destination was Koyasan, a mountain village founded in 819 by the Buddhist Monk Kukai (now referred to as Kōbō-Daishi by followers), who brought the Shingon sect of Buddhism from China to Japan. At one time, there were over 900 temples there. Today there are still over 100 temples, and it is a very active place for religious studies, pilgrimages, and tourists interested in Japanese history, religions, and natural beauty. Great Western Fiji Day Boat Race
The Great Western Fiji Day Boat Race will be held on Saturday, 9 October 2010. Boaties will be able to enjoy a skill based competition along the same lines as the famous Suva-Levuka-Suva Yacht Race. The race will take boats to Vomo and back to Musket Cove for an overnight stay. Musket Cove will provide free mooring space for all entries and a great deal on accommodation. The following day will be the fishing competition with weigh-in again at Musket Cove, followed by a barbacue dinner. Funds raised will go to the Western Cancer Society and the Fiji Kidney Foundation. Fiji Fashion Week - Art Exhibition
The 2010 Fiji Fashion Week organisers are introducing an Art Exhibition this year. For those interested to participate, fashion must be used as a source of inspiration for artwork e.g. a model, clothing, a hairstyle, catwalk scene, etc. The exhibition will show how the borders between art and fashion are blurred and how these disciplines continually link and influence each other. The special fashion feature this year is a Frangipani. The artwork must include a frangipani in whatever shape or form you wish to portray it. The three categories of the competition include : Painting; Sketch; and Photograph. A brief of less than 200 words must accompany each entry. Work must be submitted to the Fiji Fashion Week office no later than 5pm, Monday, 4 October 2010. this is where i'm at.
i got my copies of silverfish new writing 7 in the mail yesterday - actually they had arrived early last week, but i wasn't home to receive them, so had to pick them up from the post office. it was great to see my piece, the breifcase, in print. it's very different to anything i've ever written before. i'd performed the piece at a reading a while ago. i wasn't able to approve the final edit for silverfish, as technology conspired against me at the time - the editors were unable to contact me. so i only realised that the story had been included in the anthology after it was done and dusted. i'm happy with the final edit, but reading it was an interesting experience. i realised i hadn't actually decided what it was about.
