UNIFEM Film Festival

UNIFEM is organising a film festival on Tuesday, 25 November 2008, starting 7pm at the Alliance Francaise, Suva. This is to commemorate their International Campaign on Violence Against Women and Violence Against Human Rights. There will be three short films screened on the night. They are 'Morocco: Never Again', 'Nepal: Narrow Escape', and 'Congo: Find a Word for It'. The Moroccon film portrays how Morocco is coming to terms with the human rights abuses of its recent past. Televised testimonies to a truth and reconciliation commission set up by the Government have transfixed the nation. Morocco is discovering the truth about wrongful imprisonments, torture and disappearances of the past. The public has also discovered the prominent role women played in resisting abuses of the law in the 1970s and 1980s. ‘Nepal: A Narrow Escape’ is about a 24 year old woman Sushma, who was deserted by her husband and had to support her four children. pictures: moving and otherwise

recently i took myself to the movies and watched forbidden lie$. if you haven't heard about the film yet, it's a documentary based on the release of norma khouri's novel forbidden love, and her subsequent outing as a bit of a psycho. hailed at the time as one of the biggest literary hoaxes in australia (if not the world), the doco gives a thrilling - at times infuriating - insight into the mind of a conwoman. it was very frustrating to sit there and listen to her try and justify herself when it was becoming more and more obvious that she was just making things up to try and justify things she'd made up earlier. all in all, norma khouri comes across as a very confused, highly intelligent, and very disturbed woman. either way, i wouldn't want to meet her ever. anyway, i had a choc-chilli choctop, so that helped calm my nerves somewhat.  Read more...
