Net Bullies...preventing and handling cyberbullying and harassment

Netbullying takes place far more often than most adults realize. Few kids have gotten away without knowing someone who has been netbullied, netbullied someone else or been the victim of netbullying themselves.  Read more...

Site for anonymous bullying reporting

Given the recent UCLA report on young people's reticence in reporting cyberbullying (see this), this is an interesting concept: a Web site that allows students to report said anonymously. So far the Utah-Based site, SchoolTipline.com, is being used by "six Utah schools and 48 schools in other states," the Salt Lake Tribune reports. The only concern is that the site could also be abused. Given also what we know of how kids have been known to abuse abuse-reporting in kid virtual worlds (see "Top 8  Read more...

This is a site devised for college students to go online, share funny stories, experiences and is general fun for those in college. The founder, Matt Ivester has been out of college for a couple of years and designed [...]  Read more...

Safe Eyes will offer “clip by clip” YouTube Filtering

I saw a segment on The Today Show  on YouTube videos that encourage drug use. This segment  highlights the new report from the White House Offices of National Drug Control Policy releasing information about children viewing videos online that teach them how to use drugs.  After watching this I thought about how inadequate current filtering solutions are to address this problem.  In every filter I’m aware of, you either have to block all of YouTube or allow it.  Now Safe Eyes blogs about  this  Read more...

The Internet, Where No One is Under Eighteen

There are few incentives to give your real age out on the Internet, but even fewer if you are a minor.  If you answer “under 18″ on an adult website you won’t be allowed in. If you answer “under 13″ on many sites like Amazon, YouTube and others you’ll be denied access.  That’s why I had to chuckle when I read this article in The Onion. The headline reads: ‘I Am Under 18′ Button Clicked For First Time In History Of Internet  Read more...

Stop Internet Predators has announced its new Spanish website, designed to raise awareness of the new Internet technologies that can pose a threat to children. October is both National Hispanic Heritage Month and Cyber Security Awareness Month, so it’s a fitting time to launch the resource. New Bill Requires Web Safety Curriculum

I’m elated. The U.S. Senate and the House have passed federal legislation that will require some schools to educate their students about online safety, sexual predators, and cyber bullying. The Broadband Data Improvement Act  would apply to schools that receive e-Rate discounts on their telecommunications services and Internet access. Which, by the way, is just about every school on the planet. The bill will also require the Federal Trade Commission to launch a national public awareness prog  Read more...

Clickjacking

Lately, the topic of clickjacking has gained popularity in discussions on the internet. It is a new type of web attack. I decided to find out what it’s all about. I found an online video of OWASP NYC AppSec 2008 here. In the video, Jeremiah Grossman & Robert “RSnake” Hansen reported this new vulnerability in a presentation titled “New Zero-Day Browser Exploits –ClickJacking”. I also found a demo of this vulnerability here. In the videos they describe only parts of the vulnerability, but i  Read more...

Questions parents should be asking…

Questions parents should be asking… October 14th, 2008 I lectured last week at a school in Palos Verdes and a father asked me to post the questions I recommend parents asking their kids as they get online.  They are simple questions, ones you probably recognize in their original form.  Let me explain. There is the “Physical World,” the one we live in, our home, school, the mall, the workplace, etc.  Then there is the “Cyber World,” the online communities where people communicate (e-mail, IM, o  Read more...
