The NYT on Wednesday wrote:
Google and Intel have teamed with Sony to develop a platform called Google TV to bring the Web into the living room through a new generation of televisions and set-top boxes. (...)

Die Stiftung »Zugang für alle« aus der Schweiz veröffentlicht heute das erste Gratis-Programm zum Testen der Barrierefreiheit von PDF-Dokumenten. PAC – PDF Accessibility Checker – führt automatisch Prüfungen durch und erstellt einen Bericht mit den gefundenen Fehlern. PAC ermöglicht zudem eine Vorschau eines PDF-Dokuments. Diese Vorschau zeigt auf, wie das Dokument von einem blinden Menschen mit Screenreader (Bildschirmleseprogramm) interpretiert und gelesen wird.
Barrierefreie PDF sind Dokumente, die von allen – auch von Menschen mit Behinderungen – gelesen werden können. So können beispielsweise Blinde auf ein barrierefreies PDF-Dokument über ein Bildschirmlese-Programm (Screenreader) zugreifen; der Screenreader liest das Dokument vor. Die Suchfunktion von WordPress beherrscht standardmäßig leider keine Hervorhebung der gesuchten Begriffe, was eindeutig ein Mangel an Usability (Benutzerfreundlichkeit) ist.

Blippy just Rocks!
Boy do I love Blippy! Seldom has there been a service where I am so pissed that internationalization is hard. The thing is the only account I have that works with the service is my Amazon.com Kindle account. Even iTunes doesn't work as it is the German one. If you are unfamiliar with Blippy read this intro on Techcrunch as well as the follow up where Blippy announces tracking $1 million in transactions only one day after opening their doors. People are already talking about Blippy being the next Twitter, which is really mostly to mean that the Twitter idea is starting to be so big that it can be split up into more tiny niches, with Blippy being one. Facebook Overtakes Google Search
Hitwise, a web analysis business, said on its Analyst Weblog that Facebook was the most visited site last week, overtaking Google Search for the first time.
Hitwise suggests that Google Search accounted for 7.03% of US Internet visits last week, compared to 7.07% for Facebook.
If Google's non-search services (Gmail, YouTube, Maps etc) are also included, Google remains in the lead with 11.03% of US Visits. Yahoo also beats Facebook, with 10.98% of US visits.

Reader Play, Google's Slideshow of Interesting Stuff
OK, I can see myself waste some time with this. Google Reader Play is a casual, push style way to feed yourself distracting/ enlightening/ inspiring snippets, imagery and videos. You can star a specific page, Like it or share it, but just jumping from page to page using the bottom navigation works too.

No, we can't translate "Yes we can"
Ten years ago, the best-available translation software analysed the source text to determine its structure: subject, object, nouns, verbs, phrases, etc. From the structure tree, a new text could be generated in the target language.
The precise details of Google's translation algorithms are not published, but the structure tree is not the main mechanism. Instead, there is a corpus -- an enormous database of parallel works. These are works available in more than one language as a result of a previous human translation.
Based on equivalents found in the corpus, Google obtains translations for various multi-word fragments from the source text, then blends those together into what is usually a coherent sentence in the target language.

Chrome OS is not more multitasking than the iPad
I am starting to wonder if people have no clue or if I am just clueless and I seriously do not want to believe that. The thing is that everybody is complaining that Apple's iPad is not doing multitasking. Fine by me. Most things do not really need multitasking though and if the modal screens for push messages is improved you can stay online in your skype account or do other things. Sure it would be nice to be able to move a video to a small screen and continue browsing the web, but we will survive. Read more...
