Paul Ohm, an associate professor at the University of Colorado Law School, has been appointed to the Federal Trade Commission’s Office of Policy Planning as a senior policy adviser.

Denver gas prices slide as summer driving season approaches

With the first big driving weekend of the summer just days away, Denver motorists are getting a break at the pump.

AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge report for Monday shows the average price for a gallon of regular gas in the Denver area is $3.736 Monday, down 4.1 cents from a week ago and down 13.7 cents from a month ago.

Earlier in the year, steady gains in gas prices threatened to blast the price of regular in Denver through the record $4-a-gallon set in July 2008.

Community Housing Concepts remodels historic St. Louis complex

A 121-year-old apartment complex in the St. Louis area, owned by Denver nonprofit Community Housing Concepts Inc., reopened its doors Monday following a $27.3 million renovation.

Colorado stocks: StarTek up 14% as Dow rebounds

Wall Street rallied Monday after three weeks of declines, and only a dozen Colorado stocks lost ground for the day.

StarTek Inc. (SRT) had the biggest day with a 14.07 percent increase. Shares rose by 37 cents to close at $3.

Among the more actively traded stocks — those with an average daily volume of least 500,000 shares — the biggest gains belonged to:

• Molycorp Inc. (MCP): up 9.88 percent, or $1.94, to $21.58.

• Kodiak Oil & Gas Corp. (KOG): up 8.07 percent, or 64 cents, to $8.57.

Metro Denver unemployment rate at 7.9% in April

Metro Denver’s unemployment rate stood at 7.9 percent in April, down from 8.1 percent in the same month of 2011, according to raw, unadjusted county jobs data from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.

The 7.9 percent rate is for a 10-county area that includes Denver, Aurora, Lakewood, Broomfield and Centennial but not Boulder County.

Sinclair can’t condemn property for petroleum pipeline, Colorado Supreme Court rules

The Colorado Supreme Court on Monday ruled that Sinclair Transportation Co. doesn’t have the legal authority to condemn private property for construction of a petroleum pipeline.

But the seven-member court was far from united in its decision. Justice Nancy Rice wrote the majority opinion, while three other justices dissented.

Two of the justices — Gregory Hobbs Jr. and Allison Eid — went so far as to write separate dissenting opinions.

CEO of Midway Gold resigns, citing health reasons

Daniel Wolfus has resigned as chairman and CEO of Midway Gold Corp. because of health reasons, the Englewood-based company announced Monday.

Wolfus, who owns 3 percent of stock in Midway Gold (NYSE: MDW), was re-elected to the company’s board earlier this month and will remain a director.

Company president Kenneth Brunk was promoted to chairman and CEO. Brunk was named president a year ago.

High Sierra Energy to be acquired for $583 million

Denver's High Sierra Energy LP and its general partner, High Sierra Energy GP LLC, are being acquired by NGL Energy Partners LP of Tulsa, Okla., for about $583 million.

NGL Energy Partners (NYSE: NGL) on Monday announced the signing of merger agreements with the High Sierra Energy companies. The purchase price is $693 million, minus assumed debt.

The expected debt level at closing values the equity portion of the deal to $433 million and the cash portion to $150 million.

DaVita agrees to pay $4.42 billion for latest purchase

DaVita Inc. announced Monday it will pay $4.42 billion to buy HealthCare Partners, which operates medical offices in three states.

Denver’s Davita (NYSE: DVA) said it’s signed a definitive merger agreement for $3.66 billion in cash and about 9.38 million shares valued at $758 million. DaVita said it expects to use available cash, borrow under its credit facilities and tap into additional debt financing to cover the cash portion of the deal.

Denver-based startup UrgentRx has closed on a $3 million Series B round of financing, led by Los Angeles-based venture capital fund Jump Investors. Denver rated 5th cheapest destination for summer air travelers

Denver ranks No. 5 on a list of the nation's 10 most affordable destinations for fliers this summer, based on air fares, according to Cheapflights.com.

The website, which specializes in finding and publishing travel deals online, said the average roundtrip fare to and from Denver is $243.

Chicago ranks No. 1, with average fares of $218.
