Create some ripples
The small ripple in the water from throwing in a pebble can create huge waves. How many pebbles have you thrown lately? How many people have you introduced to each other lately?
Take this week time to introduce at least three people to each other. If you don't know where to start: just connect two people that have the same hobby, interest, job, title or goal. Read more...

Use a second business card to improve your results at networking events
In the post "Second Business Card" I mentioned to use a second business card to share your interests and information about yourself with other people so you can really connect with them.
You can also use a second business card to improve your results at events you attend.
For example: Read more...

The importance of networking within the organisation you work for
Last week I was asked to give a one-day training course to one of the largest IT-companies in the Netherlands.
The main focus was not on networking on business events organised by other parties, but on networking within the business unit and within the company.
The consultants of this business unit are the experts in their domains. Most of the times they are specialists in their area with many years of expertise. The disadvantage is that they don't see each other that much. They also have the responsibility for their own budget, meaning that they have to sell themselves to customers or cooperate with the sales team to get assignments. A third issue is the recruitment of new people for the company in general and their business unit specifically.
During the day we worked on discovering how we could achieve all the goals by tapping into the power of... Read more...

The imperfect leader needs to relate
In the Belgian business magazine Bizz of April 2007 there is an article from the Harvard Business Review featured about the "imperfect leader".
In the article the authors (Ancona, Malone, Orlikowski and Senge) write that too many managers are stressed out because they want to be a perfect leader and forget that they are people with strengths and weaknesses.
There is a difference between an incomplete and an incompetent leader. Incomplete leaders know what their strengths and weaknesses are and how to cooperate with others to compensate for the skills or knowledge they lack.
According to the authors incomplete leadership consists of 4 skills: Read more...

The importance of business cards
After my post about the second business card a few weeks ago I got some reactions from people saying they work for a large organisation, but don't have business cards. So I thought it might be good to share a part out of my networking book "Let's Connect!" (for a free light version of the book, visit www.letsconnect.be)
I still can’t believe that many organisations only have business cards for their “external profiles” like sales people, managing directors, project leaders or marketing managers.
What managers who cut costs by saving on business cards apparently don’t understand is that the power of networking works for every co-worker in their department or organisation. Even more important is the fact that if you don’t have a business card, you have an extra obstacle to overcome.
For many people this does not... Read more...

A small world in Malibu
Two weeks ago I was in California. One of the reasons was to meet some people who could help me with the launch of my networking book "Let's Connect!" in the USA. Another reason was to reconnect with other friends.
So I was very glad that my friend Marie Diamond (the Feng Shui master from the Secret, see also www.mariediamond.com) invited us to stay at her place in Malibu. It is always nice to spend the evening and night in someone's home instead of a hotel. And especially if it is with someone who is inspiring as Marie.
One of the regrets I had when planning the trip is that I couldn't spend time with Chris and Josephine Gross from Networking Times. I met them last year when I was in the LA area. They are not only interesting business partners (check out the website www.networkingtimes.com to see why), but also very warm and... Read more...

Is luck a coincidence or can it be created?
When you read management and personal development literature you find with many authors like Brian Tracy, Zig Ziglar, Dennis Waitley and Jim Rohn a definition of "luck".
Their definition: luck is when preparation meets opportunity.
They stress the importance of being prepared: define your goals, improve yourself, learn continuously,... Read more...

Original Gifts for Your Network
In my courses and presentations I always talk about giving.
Although we address many possibilities in the groups and although there are many more tips in my book "Let's Connect!", sometimes people find it hard to come up with something.
Especially when they want to give an original present.
On the blog of fellow networking expert Keith Ferrazzi, Ian Ybarra gave some tips. And the readers of this Never Eat Alone blog added some suggestions as well.
Let them inspire you !
