臥底UX探員宣言觀察與設計

We believe in going undercover.
We believe in introducing UX from the ground up.
We believe change comes through small victories.
We believe in delivery, not deliverables.
We believe good design today is better than great design next year.
We believe in working with people, not against them.
We believe in action, not words.
– Cennydd Bowles, James Box,《Undercover User Experience Design》

Localization for Firefox 5 and beyond on SUMOPlanet Mozilla

If you are a SUMO localizer now is a good time to prepare for the upcoming Firefox 5 release. Firefox 5 will be released on June 21, which is less than 2 weeks away and our articles are now ready to be localized. There are 7 updated articles for Firefox 5, and many of the updates are rather small, so you should have no problem updating your articles if you had them up to date for Firefox 4 already. As we have discussed before, in the future there will be 4 weeks of localization time beginning from the third week of the Beta period for every new Firefox release. But for Firefox 5 the time for localization is a bit shorter since the whole Firefox 5 development cycle is kept shorter than normal.

Better web forms with HTML5 and Firefox 4Planet Mozilla

Surely, you’ve heard of many fancy new features that HTML5 and related technologies bring to the Web now and in the future: open video on the web, canvas, transitions, what have you.
But sometimes it’s the smallest things that have the biggest impact. Besides these hyped features, HTML5 also introduces a number of semantic form fields. Before, the only textual input the web knew was, well, plain text. It was up to the web application developer to enforce certain rules around that, like making sure the input is a number, or not empty, or even a valid website address (URL).
Firefox 4 understands these new input types and helps the user by enforcing correct values even before the users submits the form. By handling validation on the client, this enables a consistent form validation UI across websites and keeps the user from constantly submitting forms and wait for the server-side form...  Read more...

XHTML Is Dead, Long Live XML-Valid HTML5

Planet Mozilla

Four years and two days ago, Tim Berners-Lee wrote Reinventing HTML where he infamously admitted:

"It is necessary to evolve HTML incrementally. The attempt to get the world to switch to XML, including quotes around attribute values and slashes in empty tags and namespaces all at once didn't work."

and then went on to announce the plan to charter a completely new HTML group and a separate group to work on the XHTML2 work which the old "HTML working group" was working on. with the explicit caveat of independence: There will be no dependency of HTML work on the XHTML2 work.

Similar words were said about XForms. Both moves (accommodating XHTML2 and XForms) were largely political, doomed from the start but perhaps providing a smoother, but slower, more face-saving termination...  Read more...

Read more...

Firefox UX Team update: Mozilla all-hands & beta 8, beta 9, beta 10 planningPlanet Mozilla

(You are encouraged to read this article with its formatting and typography intact, instead of in this RSS reader)
Next week is the Mozilla All-hands, which means most of the people working for Mozilla will be in the office to hack on Firefox 4 and discuss the future. For the UX team, the main priority is to work on (and get help with!) a lot of the niggling and annoying issues about the current main UI. Many of these bugs are easy to fix when you’re in the same room with some kick-ass developers, so we’re hoping to make some real progress here.

Alex Faaborg has put together a great visual overview — updated live! — of some of the remaining fixes that are needed — have a look and see if there’s anything here you can help fix:  Read more...
