Ways to Evaluate Educational Apps
I am conducting a series of workshops in Florida and was asked to share a rubric to help teachers evaluate educational apps as part of the workshop. In 2010 Harry Walker developed a rubric, and I used his rubric (with some modifications by Kathy Schrock) as the basis for mine. (Read Harry Walker's paper Evaluating the Effectiveness of Apps for Mobile Devices.)
I kept in mind that some apps are used to practice a discrete skill or present information just one time. Others are creative apps that a learner may use again and again, so it's a challenge to craft a rubric that can be used for a wide span of purposes. I tried to make my rubric... Read more...

"Library 2.0 Presentation" 2.0.
Gotta be fair. The program blurb for his talk mentioned "2.o" five times, but much applause to Michael Stephens for his excellent and - as far as we can tell - 100% bullshit-free keynote at the Illinois Library Association conference yesterday morning. Several times during the afternoon, we heard librarians say something along the lines of: "Like he said in the opening session ..." Read more...

Bill C-60 - How about Fair Dealing?
Bill C-60 proposes, as Jenn posted earlier today "an amendment to the current law that will allow digital copies of articles for educational purposes under the same constraints already identified by Access Copyright." Contraints indeed. Michael Geist likened it to "turning librarians in digital locksmiths." (Toronto Star, June 27, 2005). It doesn't seem that Bill C-60 is the solution we're looking for at all - we don't want to be paying for rights that already exist in the legistlation ... Read more...

Bill C-60 and Balance
The posts on Bill C-60 have raised some interesting issues. I thought it would be useful to point to Russell McCormond's site KillBillC60.ca . Aside from adding a little levity to the discussion (hopefully Tarantino agrees) he does provide some links to interesting articles about the legislation. Librarians would be so happy to be able to send digital ILL's and distance material that I think we would do anything to get there. I also think we need to pause and consider the effects of Bill C-60 for the longer-term and how it impacts individuals who do not belong to institutions with a lot of resources. Read more...

The University of Winnipeg will be testing the system to see if we can replace the eReseves/Reserves features of our Innopac system. We have had eReserves for a number of years now and it is extremely popular - a system like this could help make it even more so. Let's Use the Hashtag #iosedapp for Tweets with Educational iPad/iPhone/iPod Apps
In March 2010 I proposed that educators use the Twitter hashtag #edapp to make it easy for others to find tweets that mention an educational app when searching Twitter. I even made a t-shirt to get to word out about the hashtag. I wore that shirt and explained hashtags in Episode #22 of the Learning in Hand podcast.
You need to know that no one controls a hashtag. Anyone can use any hashtag, even if what they write is not relevant to the keyword. Unfortunately,... Read more...
